    no more no names!

    Clip to ScrapBook

In my sixth grade class, I give each student a strip of paper a meter long at the beginning of the year. They mark the strip into centimeters. Each time they forget to write their name on an assignment, they have to cut off 5 cm. Forgetting their number, date, or assignment label (or placing it all in the wrong place) costs 2 cm each. They also cut off 1 cm for no excuse spelling words.
Before Christmas break, they cut the remaining strip into centimeters, write their initials on each, and turn them in for a drawing for free time. I draw pieces until about half my class (I only have 14) have been selected for free time, while the rest do regular school work (that's not essential, so the kids with free time don't get behind.) You can also give a special prize to the winners if you don't want to use free time.
After about 2 weeks, most students aren't cutting anymore. I hardly ever have no name papers anymore. Maybe 1 a month. It's amazing!
