I teach third grade and last year we really had an extreme problem getting subs. What happened in our building was that the class was split between the remaining teachers. This means you would have 5-6 extra kids in you
room all day. You got to keep your plan period, but I think I would rather give it up than put up with the hassle this caused. I would always try to just do my lesson plans but of course you didn't have enough copies and sometimes they had already done the same assignment. It was a nightmare. This happened to us 5 times last year. We were never compensated. It was very frustrating,

we went to our administrator several times and finally fixed our proto call for calling subs. Cross my fingers knock on wood, it hasn't happened so far this year.

Another thing that happened last year was that we shared a Music teacher with another building. We went through 3 music teachers last year (long story) anyway we would not know the music teacher wasn't going to come until you would take your class down and he/she wouldn't be there or they would announce over the intercom that music classes were cancelled. We watched a lot of movies during music last year. Thankfully we have our own music teacher this year and she is awesome, no lost plan time.
