Adjectives Activity
By Amy Lee

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with jjj's ideas for Halloween adjectives. You can have students decorate real or paper jack o'lanterns. Then have them list words (adjectives) which describe the pumpkins. I have done an activity where students
make paper goblins and on a strip of paper they list adjectives which describe their goblin. The mouth of the goblin is cut out so the strip of paper can slided through and each word appears in the goblin's mouth. I had students trade goblins then they had to write a spooky Halloween story about the goblin using as many adjectives as possible. Another idea is to do an acrostic poem
using the word Halloween and have students use adjectives for each letter.

An activity to get students to think about adjectives is to show them an object dealing with Halloween such as pumpkin, ghost, etc. and have them tell you words which describe the color, shape, size, touch, sound, taste, smell, etc. You can list these words on the board, chart, etc. for later reference. I do this activity and have used Tootsie Rolls. Students can eat the candy after the activity. I have given students pictures dealing with fall . . . our local newspaper this time of year is fulfill of photographs of the fall season. You can also use old calendars with fall pictures. Students write about the pictures using the four senses.

I have given students an object in a bag and they have to list words which describe the object without revealing the object. Then they share their words and their classmates have to guess the mystery object. I demonstrate this activity before allowing students to do this on their own. Presently, my students are bringing in their own objects to describe in a paragraph and then share with the class.

Good luck.
