I think it is a great idea! However, I think it should be optional as you don't want children there that don't want to be there as this will cause behavior issues you aren't wanting to deal with (trust me!) Also, I would suggest making this portion of your school not be ran by teachers. Maybe check into an agency or hire someone to run your program. Teachers can run maybe an hour of the extras IF they desire but requiring it kinda brings on disgruntled teachers thus not making the atmosphere fun and engaging for the children which is what after school/extended day programs are supposed to be about.

I currently run an after school program on a school campus that is fee based. I have students who want to be there and parents who need to care are paying for it. I offer all the extra curriculars, (sports, games, projects, homework help etc. ) We are licensed through the state but overseen by the local YMCA. It takes the pressure off the principal and teachers. Teachers love it because if they have the time, they come to pull their students from the program for extra help or have a way to contact parents because my staff and I relay those messages or get those papers signed or to the parents. Its worthwhile I guarantee.

I do have K's and I offer them the opportunity to have rest time or down time. We have a flexible program that allows students to lay in the middle of the floor if they need to torest. Its all about how you set it up.

My idea would be: have a fee based program that would include all the extras but be overseen by a Site Director and extended day staff. OR Look into 21st Century Community Learning Center (federally funded grants)funds to offer at the least the operating costs and have parents pay for any extras and have to enroll. (Depending on your state, there may be funds there as well).

Good luck with your decision and feel free to PM if you have anymore questions.
