My school district is also in limbo over retention. The HS and MS are saying that the elem. schools need to be retaining more students. I teach elem. school, and it is very difficult to have a child retained. I've never had a child retained after 7 years, and I've wanted to retain a few. Even after they fail the state test in 3rd and 5th grade they can go to summer school and take the test again. Personally, I feel so torn over the issue. I've read a lot of the research and statistics about the negative impact of retention, so I do have concerns. However, I don't see how just passing kids on helps them either. I would think that it just depends on the individual child and if we think that retention will actually help that child. I'd like to hear more about transitional classes like varkgirl mentioned. I can see how that could be a positive experience.
