    Thank you! That is what I was looking for. I had the students write down the steps, each in a different color.
    Divide= black
    Multiply=red
    Subtract=blue
    Bring down=green

    Then as we worked the problems together, each time we did a step, we would then place that crayon at the bottom, so that each time we got to the next step, we had the correctly colored crayon to match the step. Clear as mud, eh.
    So we used black when we divided, then we placed the black at the bottom and used the red to multiply, then the blue to subtract and the green to bring down. Then the black is back at the top and we're ready to "Do it Over!" and start again. I think this clarifies the starting over part. May kids we're getting it until they had to start again.
