Frustrated too!
By Somewhat Lost

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi ER, I have the feeling we might teach in the same district. I also teach 3rd grade and am trying my best to learn how to implement Open Court Phonics along with the Houghton Mifflin Reading series and its been quite a
challenge.I think its especially difficult with 3rd graders because this is all new to them and the phonics program assumes that the students have several years prior exposure to the program. I would have really appreciated a longer training session. The district in which I work is promising to send out updated curriculum materials to show the correlation. In regards to spelling, I am giving
pre-tests on Mondays using the suggested words in the reading series. So far, this also seems to go along with what we are doing in Phonics.Any student who received a 90% or better on the Pre-test, I am giving a new list of words made up of words often misspelled by elementary students.Hopefully,it won't take too much longer to feel comfortable with the new materials. We also received new Social Studies textbooks! I am grateful for all of our new resources but right now I too am feeling somewhat lost.
