Inserting Phonics
By 3rd grade teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a phonics curriculum that is crammed into our new reading series by McGraw Hill. For some strange reason, they decided that I must have 5 hours for reading/lanquage arts so that is how long it would take for me to
teach and assign every worksheet"!" that they have made. Plus the extra 5 hours it takes to grade that stuff.

So, (breathing deeply) I do not do everything, including the phonics portion, which I may save for "rainy" days when we are off schedule. (It has not occured yet.)

Most of my students read well. Those who don't recognize phonics -- they just don't know the words that break the

conventional phonics rules....I may use my phonics books with those students. I don't know.

I just graduated school and we were taught the constructivists, hands-on approach and this series is all about worksheets (3 levels at that!). Oh yes, they do have connections to art, science etc. However, I just don't have the time to build a volcano when we are growing plants in the classroom.
