I can empathize. This is my 4th year to have first and second. My first year I stayed in tears for the first 2 months. I considered myself a good teacher. I had been teaching for 7 years at this same school before getting
a combo class. I was trying to do everything. If you were to come into my class you would see me going from one group to the other. It was a nightmare. As for breaks-there were none. The principal chose to have my firsts go to p.e., music, and library with the other first graders and my seconds with the seconds. So I always had kids with me. I teach in a private school and must eat lunch

with my students too.
Here's what I do now to keep my sanity. I teach most things on the second grade level. I was given students who scored high on SATs, can work independently, and aren't behavior problems. I have combined the first and second grade math lessons. My first graders are picking up some second grade math this way. My seconds are reviewing things they learned in first grade. I have not had a problem with my second graders being bored repeating work they had done the previous year as a first grader.
