pencil sharpening
By Sandy Hathaway

Clip to ScrapBook
One way to stop the pencil sharpening during class time is to put 2 baskets by the pencil sharpener. Whenever a student needs a pencil, they put the broken one in the green basket and take a sharpened one out of the white
basket. They aren't allowed to sharpen pencils themselves. I do it in the afternoon before I go home and they are ready for the next day. As far as them asking to go to the bathroom I have a clipboard that I hang by my door. It says "Where are you?" and is divided into sections like the following: Speech, Office, Library, Resourse, Girls Bathroom, Boys Bathroom, etc. Whenever my students
leave the room, they must clip out. They all have a clothespin with their name on it and they clip out to the appropriate section. The rule is that only one boy and one girl can be at the restroom at a time so all they have to do is look to see if someone is gone or not. (They can't leave the room if I am teaching.) If they ask me, without looking or if I am teaching, they must put their name in the discipline log which affects their citizenship grade. It takes a few days to get the message across, but I haven't had any problems since then.
