Around the holidays I put up an artificial tree in the room with white lights and at the top it has a star with the words "Giving Tree" on it. I send home a note to parents that during the month of Nov. and Dec. we will be collecting items to decorate our tree to send to troops in Iraq. We collect gum, hard candy, hand sanitizers, wipes, sunscreen, and misc. things. My fourth graders work on writing letters and sending greetings and then we send out a box every two weesks. My son has served twice over there and while he was there we sent the box to him and he handed things out to the men and women who didn't have family sending to them. Now that he is stateside this year we'll be sending it over via the Air Guard address we got from the local base and in care of one of my student's dad that is deployed their now. You can still you flat rate boxes and can stuff them full and it is very inexpensive to send and what a difference it makes to the troops when they get it.
    Good luck and thank you!
