I think the most effective way to turn children away from reading is not giving them the tools to decode and comprehend what they are reading. Reading Mastery (a DI program) is full of rich literature and provides variety and ample opportunity for enjoyment of reading. Even though I have moved and am currently at a school that does not promote DI, the skills I learned teaching DI have been invaluable in everything I teach.
