changes

Gray,
Kathy has the right idea. Parents are the ones who need to complain. School Boards are hired by parents. When the parents are dissatisfied with the school conditions, things will get changed. Our district built
a new high school about five years ago. It was a beautiful new building, very modern, with large, lovely windows looking out to the valley on the west. Well, that August when school started the teachers and students were treated to 100 degree days with these lovely windows - no window coverings - and classroom temperatures soared to over 120! Of course, it was a "modern" building and
the windows didn't open. After a couple of teachers passed out and nearly every parent let the school board know just how stupid their plan had been, the west facing classrooms were evacuated. Then the building had to be retrofitted with air conditioning and window shades. Parents at other area high schools were outraged. If one school got air conditioning, surely all schools should have it. The board was forced to provide air conditioning for all four of their high schools the next year. The elementary and middle schools are now being retrofitted. We got our air conditioning last winter (four years later!). Since our hottest weather is in late August and September, we didn't really notice the change until zoo day. We went off to the zoo on a cool morning last May and came back hot and thirsty. What a marvelous sensation to be hit by a blast of cold air when we opened our school doors!

Get your parents involved if at all possible. You may see more changes than you thought possible.
