Clip to ScrapBook
If a child does anything inappropriate, then I take him out into the hallway to talk about it. You don't need other ears watching and listening. You don't want to give the child attention that he/she might want. You also
don't want to embarrass the child. Your goal is to correct, not belittle. Speak in a soft voice, which helps dispel tension. Remember that YOU are the adult in charge; you don't need to scream at the child.

If that fails, then I call the parent IMMEDIATELY on my cell phone. It's amazing how effective it is having a phone at all times.

The next step us to have the parent come

into the office for a conference with the principal. By doing this, you are familiarizing the principal with the problem and can discuss how you can correct it.

If all else fails, and this DOES happen, I write a referral and send it to the office. The principal then suspends the child, since he knows how many steps I have already taken to this point.

The important thing is to document and communicate frequently with your parents.
