5th grade discipline
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach fifth grade, too. This year, I tried something unique--something I had never dared to try before. I only listed TWO rules for the children to follow. The first one was: "Respect others' right to learn"; the second
was: "Treat others the way you want to be treated (the Golden Rule)." Then I set a timer and had the kids brainstorm how they could do this. I got good answers like: Work quietly. Raise your hand. Keep your body parts and objects to yourself. See? They DO know what's expected of them. We just have to reinforce it to make sure they follow it. A sixth grade teacher at my school
has the best classroom management I have ever seen. She even tames the wild ones. And all she has are these two rules.

You're right: You don't have to do anything too cutesey. Just put your rules on posterboard, then surround it by a colorful border. You can keep the card system for discipline, since even fifth graders need a concrete visual for it.

Don't hesitate to ask any more questions.
