Last year one of my boy's mother died unexpectedly as well. I was able to attend the service, gave him a card directly, and bought a picture frame that he could put a picture of him and his mom in. He loved the picture frame and brought it to school with the picture. This year he's been back to check in. He did get counseling last year which I think was critical.
Just some ideas.
