When I start to teach inferring I use pictures from the newspaper and have the children discuss what they think is going on, setting, problem, etc. Then we move on to inferring as we read, usually with a read aloud. We discuss that we have to use our background knowledge and the text to infer. (background knowledge + text = inference) I have found that inference is something that is best taught a little at time throughout the entire year.
