    I teach the students (from Ellin Oliver Keene) that an inference is anything you know in your head or in your heart that the author didn't tell you.

    I often use wordless books for beginning inferring because the students don't have to deal with text. I also use Venn diagrams for students to write their thinking (evidence from text + event from life = inference).

    You can also have students infer what a character might be saying in the books too...students can interview characters (students pretending) and students have to react as if they were the character in the book.

    Hope this makes sense and gives you some ideas.
