The Curse of Elise
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
My "Elise" is named Donna. She hasn't followed me about as much as your nemesis, but she's just as vindictive and sneaky. I honestly can't say why these people believe they must do the things they do.

You should remember
that you are probably not the only person she has pulled this on. While it may seem this way to you, if she is really as underhanded as she seems, she's done this to others. I wouldn't avoid the graduate school, just her particular classes. If that's impossible, talk to her superior at the school FIRST and explain your concerns. That way if anything should happen, you will have the
upper hand. As far as having to deal with her your entire career - the world is full of change. She could move, you could move, anything can happen. Don't let this one person spoil what appears to be a good career choice. She will have a difficult time damaging your career if you are careful to be professional at all times - something we all should do as a matter of course. You might try bringing up her name with one of your closer colleagues. Ask them if they ever had any trouble with Elise or if they know anyone who did. Don't tell them what she did to you, just seek information. I bet you'll find others who suffered her bad manners and are keeping the secret. If she made you keep your mouth closed, she is doing it to others, no matter how "well respected" she appears to be. Often, someone is given that title because people fear her wrath, not because they are such a great guy. It will make you feel better knowing you weren't alone.

One last piece of advice. Document every encounter you have with this woman. Try very hard not to be alone with her. If you find yourself alone with her, tell her you want a third party present before you discuss anything. Then go get a third party immediately. Do not let her have one on one access to you. In front of another teacher she will have to mind her P's and Q's!
