transfer
By Jessica

Clip to ScrapBook
I had an experience with transfer this year, only I was in a different situation from you. I was ASKED to transfer.

I had just finished my first year at a new school (I have taught for nine years) when the principal
told us that he would have to cut a teacher. What really irritated me was that I began to receive telephone calls from principals in other schools before the principal I was working for had had the courtesy to inform me that I was the one being transferred. What was worse, some of the schools were totally out of my reach in this large, county school district. One of the schools was an
hour and twenty minutes away from home. The first action I took was to call Personnel and tell them that I was not interested in a transfer and to please not submit my name to other principals until I had at least had a chance to talk with my principal.

One thing I WISH my principal had done before he submitted my name as an involuntary transfer to Personnel was ask the other staff members if they wanted to transfer FIRST. Many of the people at my school live in the county and can drive the distance I could not.

Another thing that irritated me was that there was a teacher who had ASKED for a transfer about the same time I was being arranged to tranfer, but the principal wouldn't hear of her leaving.

It hurts to know that I was so unimportant that the principal would not take the time to sit down with me to tell me that I was being transferred. It also hurt that this other teacher was apparently more important to him than I was. So important that he was willing to let me go while he kept her there at his insistance.

You are not alone, Ray, as a victim of dirty, ugly politics. It's everywhere, I fear.
