teaching to the test
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with you, JL. We spend too much time stressing ourselves and the kids out on state tests, just to make sure that they look good on paper. In SC, they have names for the levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and
Advanced. Most of my students were Below Basic in reading and math when I got them. Did that make the last teacher a bad teacher? No, I don't think so. Of course, those who make up the tests don't stop to think that children in low-income schools such as the one I work in may never score a 3 or a 4, no matter how good of a teacher you are. The child also has to be willing to meet
you at least halfway, and the parent has to help you help the child. Tests, such as the state test, do not measure income levels, level of parent involvement, motivation of the child, and so forth. In my opinion, they are too hard for the children I teach! Let's face it: Not all kids are going to grow up using algebra.
