I have one or two every year By freckleface

| and it's a struggle, but you do what you can. I teach second grade and have 22 kids this year. The little girl I have this year is at a 3-4 year old developmentally. She is a sweet little thing and does try. Here's what I do and what I've done in the past. She has an IEP and so is out of my classroom for 90 min every day. When she is there she works on handwriting, dot-to-dots, writing the alphabet. I make handwriting papers for her. She has a short list of words to practice every week so she writes them 2-3 times. This summer I bought some preK workbooks in math, language, cut and paste, and some patterning cards. She works on these, too. She also can do simple addition worksheets using counters. She strings beads to work on patterning and does patterning with unifix cubes. I have cards for those, too. She works on some very easy phonic skills with me. When we are in a group then she partcipates as much as she can with the help of the other students. On the first day of school she went out with her resource teacher and I talked to the class how she learns differently than the rest of us and that they may see her do things that seem really easy to them and wonder why. But now they know and that it's our job to help her as much as we can because she is a member of our classroom family and we take care of each other.
They are so sweet to her and are so willing to help her. Yesterday I wanted her to go to the office to ask the secretary to make a copy and I asked one of my smartest boys with a mouth to match to go with her and show her where it is. He took her hand and asked her if she wanted to carry the paper. He was so sweet, that I teared up, and patted him on the back.
Every year I've had one or two like this and I've just decided to help them get as far as I can and make whatever accomodations I can. If you need more ideas, please PM me. They are joy because they try so hard and every little accomplishment is celebrated with great excitement in our room by the whole class.
