this is my 30th year teaching and believe me I've pretty much seen it all. I would definitely call home and discuss the issue. Even better would be to set up a time for a parent conference and get a handle on what's going on with this child. It won't take long for all your other students to see that nothing negative is happening to this child when he behaves in this manner... and they'll follow his lead, some sooner than others. You need to "nip it in the bud"!!! You probably also need to talk to your school's guidance counselor and get them in to observe this child before your parent conference. I have found that ignoring problem behaviors just doesn't work... they need to be dealt with and resolved asap. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't want to have to spend the rest of the year dealing with it.
