    maze passages

Our school has just started using Maze passages from AIMSweb for comprehension. I think it specifically assesses context, and there are other facets to comprehension, but it's the closest you can get with an easy and quick assessment.

You can create your own using these guidelines. The first sentence is left intact. After that, every 7th word is replaced with three words in parentheses. One is the actual word from the passage, one is a near distractor (same part of speech such as a noun for a noun) and the other is a word that just sounds ridiculous. The ones we gave had a 3-minute time limit, so the kids don't overthink things and go back to change answers they've already marked.

Our students didn't do as well as what we would find in an actual reading situation for comprehension. We gave the test to 2nd and 3rd graders. I hope this helps.
