I use technology as much as possible - computer, recorded books, language master card readers, hot dot pens, etc. If you haven't used hot dot pens, you have to try them. You make your own cards with some type of multiple
choice questions. Then you attach hot dot stickers that allow the children to select their answers with a special pen. It beeps for wrong answers and plays a 3-5 second fun sound for correct answers. The best part is that you can hear if they are playing around and not doing the activity correctly. If they aren't available in your area, e-mail me and I'll forward a web site link.
We can also check out taped books from out state library if we have "print disabled learners" in our classrooms. The books are sent and returned through the mail. You may want to check with your library system to see if anything similar is available. I also use phonics song tapes and tapes of my current reading stories using the Carbo method. If I have students who just can't keep up in reading, I'll do Carbo tapes for lower level books for them.
