I did end up giving the child the A. I was a teacher who was new to the district, and, of course, wanted to please everybody. The child agreed to make up the work because she was absent from school on the day the work was assigned. The made up work raised her grade to an A. I reminded myself that I wasn't so stiff that I couldn't compromise.
