    Different approach

My campus takes a different approach - the whole school is divided up into "families". Each "family" has a Kindergarten, a First Grade, a Second Grade, and a Third Grade classroom (my campus is K-3). I am in the Village family. Our "families" are - Vilage, Shuttle, Hive, Stars, PALS, Explorers. Students who are placed in the Village Kindergarten stay together the following year in the Village First Grade. Siblings are all placed in the same "family". "Families" have picnics together, plan PTA programs together, work together in Santa's Workshop to make Christmas gifts for their parents, and work together during Family Time (several times a year we plan activities such as Author/Illustrator Studies, researching states and countries, and art projects). Additionally, we usually assign "buddies" within our "families", and we read with our buddies and exchange letters.
