If not, I suggest that you just compact your curriculum a little and infuse more read alouds. We take read aloud breaks between subjects in the afternoon. It's like everyone breathes a sigh of relief and when it's over they are refreshed. This is because read alouds are a quiet time in my room-- I turn off the lights and read under a lamp. The kids get to enjoy a good book and talk to each other about it. It's not like taking a music break (we do those in the morning) b/c it doesn't wind them up. It's only my personal opinion, but I think we expect too much of first graders. Our curriculums are so demanding, and for the first half of the year, they are still babies. They need to be in a joyful learning atmosphere. Good luck with it!! :D
