Don't feel too bad. I have taught for years and still screw up! You can't always predict how a lesson or activity will go with a group of kids. I had a group of fourth graders one year who LOVED studying and reading about Indians. I selected the novel "Sign of the Beaver"--an Indian story--for this year's fifth graders. They HATED the novel! The moral of the story here is that you will not always be able to predict what will work with individual classes. I am still learning my lessons.
