    The Important Book

Last year was my first year in 3rd grade as well. We read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown on the first day.

It goes through describing different things in a repetative pattern. So we wrote an Important Book about our class. Each students followed the pattern to describe what was important about them.

For example a student might write:
The important thing about Yvette is that she loves her family.
She has 2 brothers and one sister.
    Her dad works at Albertsons.
They like to eat pizza together.
But the important thing about Yvette is that she loves her family.

The kids loved doing it. I spread it over a couple of days. I put all of the students' pages together to make the book and we read it as a class. It was a great way for us all to get to know each other and for me to get an idea about where they were academically.
AND it was so much fun reading it a couple of times throughout the year, especially on the last day. The kids were just beaming when I read it on the last day :-D (Even though alot of students had come and gone throughout the year, it was a really great activity.)
