I have been confused about this myself. I do not like to just grade a student's work based on the final copy because by this time they have had student feedback on it and it is not necessarily only their work now. I am going to have little minilessons and I will teach a specific topic. I will take a grade every time (or try to) that I have these lessons on how the student implemented that idea. For example, using more sensory words. I will then have them do a writing assignment (or continue on one they are already working on) and grade them entirely on their use of sensory words. Did they include all senses? Did they use them correctly? etc. It will be hard because I will have to make a rubric for each minilesson, but these can be used each year.
