Happens in Virginia Too
By Amy Lee

Clip to ScrapBook
I know what you mean. We have the same problem in Virginia with sixth grade science in our district. I am using a textbook from the early 1990s. This is not too good when it comes to teaching science especially astronomy
and genetics. I have to supplement with materials from the internet, science magazines, local newspaper, and workbooks which I purchase with my own money. Fortunately our school purchase a computer program called ALS which correlates with our state standards and test. The students complete multiple choice questions and if they achieve a certain score then they get to play a computer game
before going on to more questions.

I know for math and history our school purchase "coach workbooks" which correlate to our state tests. VA posts past state tests and answer key on a website for teachers and students to use. Maybe your state department of education has a similar website.

I hope SC elementary science teachers respond to your post.
