microscope subjects

Another fun thing to do is to grow brine shrimp and observe them under the microscope. You can buy brine shrimp eggs at tropical fish stores, or at the toy store marketed as "sea monkeys". Either way, you hatch the eggs in salt water. They can be fed tiny amounts of dry yeast. To view them best you can use a slide with a shallow well to hold a drop of water with a brine shrimp swimming around in it. I've found you can catch the tiny shrimp using an eye dropper, but wear your reading glasses! They're SMALL. Your students can view the eggs, the newborn shrimp and also view shrimps as they grow. They are fun to watch because they move.
