    I use anchor charts

for writing. I make them with my students and they refer to them during guided practice. I have a "No More Go or Went" chart that has lists of vivid verbs to use instead of go or went. I used the book Crickwing (by Janelle Cannon, I think). to introduce it, because it's loaded with vivid verbs. Also, I have a "Put Said to Bed" anchor chart--again using Crickwing to show literature examples to use instead of "I said, I said, I said." I also have charts that have sentence starters for fluency. It's really helpful to have these charts during guided practice, because I can say "You've used the word said six times--look up on the chart and get another word for said."
Eventually they start incorporating the new words into their writing and vocabulary. Another bonus is you don't have to spell it or them--they copy the correct spelling off the chart!
