Number formation By Michelle

How about making individual number books or even a class number book? Or maybe have groups of students work together to make a number poster? Don't give them worksheets to fill in and staple together! Instead, have the| students fold the paper in half to make the booklet (warning!!!-this is a difficult skill for 1st grade) and then write the numbers and draw illustrations. Also, consider using the overhead projector. When you're only six, it's still like MAGIC!! AND, if your teacher lets you have a turn to write on it -- WOW! Choose only the quietest students to write! Some other ideas:
1 |
| - Use edibles to create the number (ex. line up pieces of popcorn to make the number) Cereal is the cheapest. Use the no-name brand fruit loops. They're colorful and taste good but have way less sugar -- important since you obviously have to eat your numbers!2 - Numeral art - Give the students large number outlines to cut out and cover with collage materials. 3 - Rainbow numerals - Have the students write the numbers in a rainbow format. Going down the page, write the first number in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Then, go back and write the second number in each color beside the first. After writing several numbers, you will have a number rainbow! Use markers or crayons 4 - Paint the numbers using finger paint, paint brush, sponge pouncers, dot markers etc. 5 - Make smelly numbers - the students write the numbers in glue and then sprinkle powdered jello or kool-aide (unsweetened) in the glue. When it dries, it's fun to trace and it smells great! One little tip, have something close to the end of the lesson that the kids can do somewhat independently. This will give you time to cirulate among the children to deal with individual problems.
