I've been on maternity leave three times - and each time my planning has been different. The first time I was totally unprepared - my water broke (at school) three weeks before my due date. Yikes! Luckily, they hired someone who was certified and could certainly do the job. I was much more prepared the second time around. I created a binder which included the curriculum information as well as a time-line for each unit. I also included what I had done in previous years on the units she would be expected to teach. I left management information and was sure to introduce her to rest of the department so that she would have someone to turn to for help. I provided lesson plans for the first unit she would be required to teach just so that she would have an idea of how I organized things. Subs in my district start getting regular teacher pay after 9 days - so I feel they can certainly make their own lesson plans.
