Here's an idea...

My co-op uses smiley faces and stop signs attached to tongue depressors as a management technique. I have used this in my lessons and it works extremly well with first grade. If I see a student working hard and staying on task I simply place a smiley face on their desk. If a student is not on task I put the stop sign on their desk. The students want to get rid of the stop sign so they start working real quick. It is inexpensive and works well. Plus, if you laminate them they hold up. Just remember not to overuse it. Hope this helps.
