What if you explained venn diagram to the class (the 2 circles that overlap to show how 2 things are alike and different) and practiced with a few. Then, once the students have a grasp on venn diagrams, you could extend the idea by showing how they can use a venn diagram to compare and contrast in their writing. I think the terms compare and contrast would just be vocabulary. Once the venn diagram is filled out, it's simply a process of forming the ideas jotted down into complete sentences and in an order that makes sense. I hope this helps.
