I just finished student teaching kindergarten in California, after having taught 5th/6th grade previously. Kindergarten is so unique in terms of the short day structure and the amount of freeplay. I learned a lot about centers and a great deal about classroom management. Since this is often many children's first exposure to school they need to be taught EVERYTHING about procedures and management. What I learned less about was whole group instruction and things like writer's or reader's workshop. I'm glad that I did it because I learned I loved Kindergarten. I also feel that with the other grades it's easier to transfer skills. If this is your first assignment I think K is a great place to start. Leigh.
