Chances are you will be reading and critiquiing the books for an elementary reading methods/literature class. I had to do that several years ago, although I didn't buy them--I borrowed them from some teacher friends and the library. Look on the bright side, you have a set of teacher read aloud books or a starter set for your first classroom library when you begin teaching. It is a bit ridiculous to ask college students to invest in so much, though!
