As far as resources being readily available once you are a first-year teacher - it really depends on the school - I've taught in a few schools - some with great resources and others - well - not so great. If you learn how to find resources, units, etc., via your student teaching it will make your first year teaching much easier. It also sounds like your cooperating teacher wants to see what you can do creatively and so I'm sure she'll love your bulletin board idea. As far as the unit on soil is concerned chances are there is no teacher manual - you might want to ask her if this is a theme she has chosen or if it is part of the curriculum. She should at least give you the curriculum guide if it is part of the curriculum to help you focus the unit. If it is a theme she uses then you basically can take it anywhere you want. Don't go overboard buying resource books either, if you end up not teaching that grade then you'll have all these resources you won't ever use again. Again check out your education library at your college or university - check the web - post questions here and I'm sure you'll do fine. Since you've heard good things about this teacher I'm sure it will all work out in the end. It sounds like she takes her position seriously and wants to give you a great experience where you learn things that will be invaluable in your career. Good luck and have fun
