I think the most important thing is to have a plan. Teach your classroom rules, and know exactly what you're going to do if a student breaks them. Then stick with you plan- be consistent.

I was very inconsistent with my classroom discipline the first couple of years that I taught. I would let too many things slide, and then frustration would build up inside me. I knew I had to do something. I read Lee Canter's "Assertive Discipline" and it really helped me. Now I have a plan that I teach the kids on the first day of school. I know exactly what to do if a rule is broken, and the kids (and parents) know what will happen, too. This has really allowed me to focus more on teaching and taken a lot of the stress out of my days!
