The word study journals keep all their assignment. They complete each of the assignments on the activity sheet, making sure that they date and label each page. Some techers have students glue their words in at the end of the week. (I have not done this, we just recycle the word cards at the end of the week) The activities on the sheet are completed at school or home. My class has a work contract to complete while I am meeting with Guided Reading Groups. Some students get all their word study done in class, while others bring it home. I do however strongly emphasize that even if the activity is done, students are to sort the words each night at home. I have thought about having a log (like a reading log) for parents to sign to prove that they have sorted their words, but I find many of the parents in my community sign logs regardless of seeing the student complete the task. Instead I just go on the honor system. If students are doing well on the assessments, then I know they are doing what they need to learn the features. I hope this is clear.
