My degree was a five year bachelor of elementary education, I was admitted in second year after completing some general courses in Mathematics, English, etc. Second year
Fourth year was the big year. We took year long courses in assessment, language arts, math, science and social studies. We also had two long practicums during the year. We were encouraged to teach one in a primary classroom and one in an intermediate classroom. The practicums and the courses were mixed together so that we basically saw a whole school year. We went to our schools for the first week of September to observe and then every Tuesday in September and October. We taught one lesson per week (different areas). Then from the end of October until Christmas we were just at the school teaching from 60%-100% depending on the week. We had to teach 100% for about two weeks. Then in January we switched to new schools and new classes and repeated the process. We went the first week of January and then every Tuesday in Jan., Feb. and Mar. at the end of Mar we were at the school full time until the beginning of May. Basically during the year if we weren't at the school teaching, we were at the university learning. Fifth year was the specialization year. (Most of us hated having to come back to do another year but looking back on it, it was totally worth while). We had to take a course in the History of Education or Philosophy of Education and a course in Curriculum studies. (I loved both of these courses) Then we could focus on an area. Math, Language Arts, Science, Computer Technology, Social Studies, English as a Second Language, Learning Assistance, etc. I choose a Math/Computer specialization although now I wish that I had specialized in ESL as 100% of the students in my kindergarten class have English as their second language.
