I feel your pain! I too am struggling with management issues. Howver, I found something that has helped. It's called turning your word into gold-the art of enforceable statements. When I read your post about how you had to tell the students to open their books about 10 times-these little tid bits of gold came to mind. Next time try telling them this: ""I'll be working from page 55". You can enforce this and it also puts the ownership onto the student-where it belongs! Give it a try!
