During writing times, I use soft (barely audible) music. I took a class on brain-based teaching and the instructor said that instumental boroque music (I use a Vivaldi collection) is best for independent study or writing. It has something to do with the brain's natural rythmns. I play a different CD (Brain Power- I think it is a collection for babies) that is also boroque in tempo during reading. This music was a signal for them to begin writing/reading. I used other music for transitions and free choice centers (full-day kindergarten). I moved away from soft melodic music, like oceans and stuff, when I had children falling asleep on me :)! I downloaded both CD's from WalMart or some other site.
