I've done this before, but not often. I probably should say not often enough since the kids enjoy it.

I invited one of our reading specialists to come in to do a special reading and/or writing activity with the kids last year. She brought in a CD that had opera on it. Without providing background on the song, she had the kids listen to it and then respond in their journals about what they thought the song was about by listening to the artist's voice and the mood of the music. Afterward, the kids shared their responses. Boy, did they enjoy this! They had some excellent responses.

I've played music, volume down and instrumental only, when the kids have taken tests before. That worked well, too.
