On the first day of school I always read First Day Jitters too! (And on the last day I read Last Day Blues by the same author) The next day I read a book called The Name Jar - it helps everyone to understand how we are each unique and special. The third day I usually read The Araboolies of Liberty Street - a great story about being different but still being able to work together.

At that point, I usually start my first chapter book, and every year I always start with the same one - Herbie Jones by Suzy Kline. It is a great story to me because though the main character is a third grade boy, there is a very strong female secondary character. I also love it because Herbie, the main character, is not a "great" student but is someone who loves to read, even though it is hard for him. Most of the book revolves around his struggles in school and how he over comes them - all in a fun, engaging read. There are a few books that follow in the series - I usually read the 2nd one - What's the matter with Herbie Jones - and then put the rest of the series out for the kids to read independently.
