We use weekly assignment (really homework) sheets - these are on the back of their weekly newsletter. At the bottom of the assignment sheet is their discipline chart, so I get 3 things on 1 piece of paper and it's only copied weekly.

I don't write down the assignments for the kids. They start learning to do that in 2nd grade at our school, so I continue it with 3rd. I write the homework on the board and the kids copy it onto their homework sheet. I check it briefly while I'm stamping their behavior log at the bottom of it at the end of the day.

The weekly newsletter is what I use to inform parents of what we're doing that week. I don't go into specifics (page numbers, etc...), I just say something like: Science: constellations, S.S. : maps, Reading: Judy Moody, L.A.: editing, Math: subrtracting 2 digit numbers with borrowing. Then I send home graded papers on Friday, so the parents can go over them with their child - and review anything the child may have struggled with.
