    filing

i've got a big mail sorter (aka, literature organizer) and each child has a section. everything goes in there all in one place. signed tests, behavior reports, and notes from parents (that aren't attendance related). i have found that we rarely have to back track to find something for a student that all of the filing you are talking about wastes a lot of time. instead, if someone asks for something, i can take out one pile of things and spend two minutes looking through the pile for the requested item. two minutes a few times a year is less combined time than all of that filing you are doing.

we use a roll book where each child has a roll sheet. when i call home, i make a note on the back of that sheet. in this same notebook, i have two ziploc bags with holes punched in them so they stay in the binder...one is for late passes, and the other is for excuse notes. i have only been asked to look for someone's sick note once, so i spent about 5 minutes looking through the ziploc bag. that one time of 5 minutes was much less than having to file more.
